Vermont’s glacial geology is expressed in this Rumford style fireplace and hearth.

Hand “ragged” wall treatment contrasts and softens custom steel stairs. Wall treatment continues theme of local geology with stones collected from nearby lake.

The center of the garden is a thin window with a horizontal bar – gnomon - that casts a shadow along a brass strip in the floor marked with birthdays, anniversaries, graduations.

The sweep of the porch and the living area are enhanced by the bow ceiling, allowing the interior and exterior spaces to flow together.

The dining area features a custom-designed chandelier affording both candles and dimmable electric lighting. The counterweight allows one to adjust the height of the lighting.

All social spaces are aligned, allowing homeowners and guests to be both together and apart. Even from the kitchen, it’s effortless to call the guests in from the library.
